Reiser and Dempsey presented a few different forms of instructional design/technology that I believe would be useful where I teach school. The first is technology-based training delivery. In the past few years I have been through a few different types of training that implemented through the internet. I believe this is an effective use of training personnel, time, and resources. Also, a nice benefit of training through the internet allows the trainee to be able to receive training according to their own schedule. The training I received allowed me to complete the sessions in a reasonable amount of time; I also received instant feedback which was beneficial to my learning and application of the training I received.
The second form of ID/T that I think is useful in business is globalized training. This form of training is most likely a great benefit to large companies that have employees in many different locations. For instance, one of my brothers and his wife both work for an oil/chemical company located in the midwest. They both have had jobs that have taken them all over the country and the world. Many times they receive or give training sessions that are online and occurring in more than one location at a time. If they were not able to conduct globalized training, the cost of the trainings and the amount of time needed to get every person trained would rise significantly.
I believe that technology-based training will be very useful in the years to come in the educational world. Many of us are already involved in receiving such training. The globalization of training is an idea that I believe can be implemented for educators if we want to share ideas with other people in the United States or across the world.
As far as the assignments that we have completed thus far, I have found all of them to be interesting. I love working with technology and the internet. I believe I have learned a great deal already and find the pacing to be very reasonable. I have been working on setting up a couple of wikis for two of my classes–information basis mostly– psychology-schoenborn.wikispaces.com and schoenbornenglish12.wikispaces.com. Actually, in two days another teacher and I are conducting a technology presentation; my portion is going to introduce my wikis. Then, we will be helping other teachers get started on their own. I am enjoying myself immensely.
A few of the projects I was a little bit intimated by at first but found myself able to get into them with little or no problem. I definitely am finding ways to incorporate some of what we have learned into teaching already. My favorites are wikis, bookmarking, and the photo site, but I think all of them will be useful for me in education. I love the fact that I am able to apply what I am learning so quickly. As my first course for the Masters in EDT, I believe it to be a good start.
I think all of the technology tools and skills we are learning are fantastic. However, I also believe we are learning through the way this course is set up–on-line learning and blogging. These are ideas I would love to utilize eventually with some of my future students.

Internet-based training seems to be much more accomodating, doesn't it? I also have had positive experiences with this and enjoy the flexibility it offers as well as the immediate feedback.
ReplyDeleteYou give an excellent example of the importance of globalalized training. Prior to this chapter I never really gave much thought into the planning and sensitivity that is involoved with presenting information to other cultures. I found that to be very interesting!
Great job on incorporating the use of Wiki's and now being in the position of sharing your information with your colleagues!

Hi, Pat:
ReplyDeleteBoth you and I think the content of this course is very useful and interesting. This course does give me a lot of different ideas and thoughts about the technologies that we use everyday. I also believe this course, just like you said in the post, is a technology-base training, and we are trained to be familiar with those technologies so that we can use them into our professional works. I am glad that you can deploy what you have learned from this course into your work. Great job!

Hi Pat,
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting that you are able to present what you’ve been designing for your classes and then be involved in instructing other teachers how to do it! I have been cogitating on all of the possibilities these technologies represent, but at the moment have nothing immediate to which I can apply them. That is likely to change over the next few months, so I think I will be able to utilize a couple when we get our online newsletter up and running and put some “cool stuff” on the website.
Yes, I found that section of Globalization of Training quite interesting, too. I have a friend who is from China, works for a large fashion company in France, and has to communicate with producers in Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, and buyers in Europe and the U.S. It occurred to me that they must have to do a certain amount of online training and that they must have to pay close attention to “internationalization” as they prepare all of their training materials whether online or in print.
I was intrigued by what they were saying about needing to make the presentation culturally neutral. We always seem to think of these cultural differences in areas of diplomacy, etc., but the opening up of the world by technology will definitely demand more awareness on the part of instructional designers in time to come, especially as more American companies are producing product outside of the U.S.
Have a great break!

It’s interesting to hear of all the people that are doing additional training for their present position or certification through the Internet. It is so convenient and saves time for the employee as well as reducing costs to the employer. It sounds as if your experience was a positive one.
ReplyDeleteYou are not the only person in the group to bring up globalized training. Check out Jennifer’s idea for students in a geography class to add some technology. Like your brother and his wife, I have a friend that travels the world as a consultant but must continually be updated on the last information in her field. Internet training has proved the only reliable and timely source to keep her ahead of the competition.
Like you I will be attempting to add wikis to my class. I’m anxious to see how students receive them. I’m guessing that you and I will be seeing (virtually) each other again in the degree program.
